GOODBYE FRIENDS TIL WE MEET AGAIN

our best friends, tommy and lydia, recently moved to a house in denton, and we miss them like crazy. what you might not know is that while tommy and lydia lived in our apartment complex, we shared our bedroom wall with theirs, and even more importantly, shared an internet connection!

thus, when they moved out, we lost our internet! not such good news for a blogger and etsy store owner. that's why i've been a bit delayed in posting lately. i've also been playing around with my blog's layout and design. i would love love love to hear your feedback and/or suggestions for making my blog more "aesthetically pleasing' or easier to navigate so pretty please feel free to share your suggestions.

in the meantime, here is something i wore the other day:)

top: vintage
bottom: vintage
necktie: vintage (for sale in my store)
sandals: UO

happy memorial day everyone!

Life Is So Good

the other day while i was babysitting, the little girl i was sitting for, riddhi, pulled out a book that her father had recently bought, 'life is so good.' i started thumbing through it, and was so inspired by what i found. i would try and give you a summary, but i'll let random house do it instead:)

Born in 1898 in Marshall, Texas, the grandson of slaves, George Dawson tells how his father, despite hardships, always believed in seeing the richness in life and trained his children to do the same. As a boy, George had to go to work to help support the family, and so he did not attend school or learn to read; yet he describes how he learned to read the world and survive in it.

...At ninety-eight, George decided to learn to read and enrolled in a literacy program, becoming a celebrated student. "Every morning I get up and I wonder what I might learn that day. You just never know." ...throughout his story, George Dawson inspires the reader with the message that sustained him happily for more than a century: "Life is so good. I do believe it's getting better."

rhiddi and i started talking about the book and she asked me, 'does this book teach us a lesson?' what a question from such a small little girl! 'yes,' i answered her, 'what lesson do you think it teaches us?' i was so honored and excited to be having such an important conversation with such a tender heart.

we talked about how george did not let his circumstances stop him from pursuing his dream. and rhiddi asked me another big question--'is life so good?' wow. how would i answer? i could have just said yes, it is. but the teacher/realist in me wanted to give her a better answer. i told her life can be good, and that we can help make our lives better by making good choices.

i have yet to read this book, but it is on my long long list. have you heard of it? what would you have said to rhiddi?

MOVIES PLEASE

i am always on the hunt for a new movies. it makes me happy to know that there are people out there making great films.

i remember one summer, my roomate, lauren, and i would go to braum's everyday and rent at least one or two movies. that was while i was in college, before i actually had to work full-time--it was glorious!

here are a few movies i discovered that i really want to see.

this movie looks really intense, but looks like it could be pretty good. i am eager to see elizabeth olson acting. i like that it seems sort of like a thriller, which i don't watch very often for some reason.

this movie has so many great people in it! natalie portman + joseph gordon levitt = a win win.

this movie is already out in theatres! i have a soft spot in my heart for coming of age movies/books.

so, what do you think? are there any movies you are looking forward to watching this summer?

FALLSTOWN USA

hello from the wonderful city of wichita falls, tx! i am here at my parents visiting for the weekend. it has been waaaaay too long since i have seen my family--i really missed them. hopefully i will be sharing some pictures of the weekend, but until then here's some pics of an outfit i wore last week.

i originally wore this outfit in order to have some pictures to post for my etsy store, but i liked what i was wearing so much i decided to wear it the whole day! i also like this pic so much i decided to use it for my header:)

it turns out i didn't have this tank for long-- a lovely girl from switzerlad bought it the day afer i put it up! my first international order:)

the silk tank i sold is vintage, F21 cutoffs, necklace from a market in thailand, vintage bracelet and watch, urban outfitters sandals

ok, so i know it is sappy, but i have to share something my sweet husband did the other day. i came home expecting to see him on the couch on the computer. but he was waiting for me with banjo, lights dimmed, 'our song' playing. he had even put a little bowtie on banjo! then he took me by the hand, and we danced:)

what a sweetheart, huh? what are some special things your honey has done for you? hope you guys are having a splendid weekend,

hearts!

For the Silent

last week i had the awesome opportunity to attend a meeting put on by the non-profit 'for the silent.' for the silent's mission is to advocate for children silenced by sexual exploitation and trafficking. i am so glad i went to this meeting--i feel more informed about this issue and pressed to pray for victims of sex trafficking.

here are a few facts i would like to share with you...

child sex trafficking is modern day slavery in which children are sold, deceived, or forced into sexual exploitation.
it's estimated that 1.2 million children are trafficked every year.
13 is the average age of entry into prostitution.
human trafficking is the second most profitable crime in the world.
100,000 american children are trafficked in the US every year.

if you would like to learn more please visit http://www.forthesilent.org/.

i would also like to share a couple of new things i've added to the store this week:)

happy tuesday everyone!

Green Velvet If You Please

yesterday lucas and i went to go see blue valentine at the dollar theatre. oh my gosh, so so so so sad! very beautiful, but just sad. i really liked it, minus the many sex scenes, and i thought the ending credits were really cool. but i seriously had to hold back sobs at the the end. i am a big movie crier, but still. anyone else seen this movie? thoughts?

here are a few pics of an outfit this week.

vintage top, vintage dress worn as skirt, F21 necklace, ASOS ring, khol's shoes

this skirt is actually a dress that i have for sale in my etsy store. if you are interested in buying let me know!

This Made Me Happy:)

i was so happy when i saw that sarah from oh, lovely day! gave me the stylish blogger award! thank you sarah! it makes me happy to know that people would even look at my blog, let alone count me as stylish:) now it's my turn to pass the honor along to five other bloggers:

sofia at sofianeander
majobajo
rachel at parrish the thought
charis at seastation
sarah nicole at anonymouswasawoman

here are the rules that follow the award:
1. thank and link to person who gave the award.
2. share seven random facts about myself.
3. pass the award along to five new-found blogging buddies.
4. contact the winners to congratulate them.

7 random facts...
1. i didn't have a boyfriend until i was a junior in college. i was pretty much scared of boys all throughout highschool:)

2. i am a notorious quitter. i know that sounds really bad, but unless i am either really good at something, or extremely passionate about it, i tend to just quit--so horrible! i stopped playing the piano, violin, clarinet, and changed my major from business marketing to fashion design to art education.

3. i have always been a late bloomer. i didn't lose my first tooth until i was 8 years old and didn't learn how to ride a bike (without training wheels) until that same year--so embarrassing as a kid!
4. i took classical ballet for 17 years. i was actually pretty good and even spent a summer studying with joffrey ballet.

5. aliens scare the crap out of me. i used to watch unsolved mysteries as a kid and i think it did some damage. just one glimpse of those pictures of the aliens with the big eyes and i can't get it out of my head!

6. my most beloved pet was a pekipoo named noodles:)

7. i make all kinds of dough and mixes just to eat--cake mix, cookie, dough, brownie dough, biscuit dough, you name it! so good!

i feel like this post has revealed what a huge dork i really am, but that's what makes each of us beautiful and unique, right?

hope you're having a wonderful day,
hearts!
