Fill In The Blank Friday

1.   My favorite color is   blue? i hardly ever wear blue, but when i think about the color blue it makes me think of the ocean and being calm and happy and i like that!

2.  My travel destination of choice is    somewhere warm and exotic, with both mountains and beaches. calgon take me away!

3.  My favorite  food is   indian or thai. mmmmmm:)

A Woman After My Own Heart

so, i watch a lot of cartoons. not because i necessarily want to, but because when you are around kids it's pretty much a given. and when you watch a three year-old little girl, the chances of those cartoons having a princess of some kind almost triple:)

the other day as i was watching snow white for the thirtieth time, i began to see her royal highness in a new light. the first thing snow white did when she entered the dwarve's little cottage was notice how dirty it was and, thenceforth, begin to clean it--we're talkin' full-blown scrub-down here too. yes snow white, yes! i too cannot stand a dirty house. thank you for being kind enough to clean up after those messy little dwarves, but not too nice to let them get away without a good scolding:)

do these shoes look familiar? they look almost exactly like the ones snow white is wearing! aren't they cute? you can find them here on modcloth:)

as i was browsing pictures of miss white to use for this post i came across a very interesting photograph by dina goldstein. dina was inspired by the origins of fairy tales, whose stories are surprisingly often very dark and disturbing. (if you have ever read the original 'little mermaid you know what i'm talking about.) dina decided to juxtapose disney's idealized princesses with real-life  women struggling with issues like identity, illness, addiction, etc. here's her portrayal of snow white.

not exactly snow white's perfect ending, (ie lazy prince watching tv as sw deals with their four children.) not the most heartwarming of photographs either, but very interesting. goldstein also features rapunzel, cinderella, ariel, and jasmine among others in her work, oftentimes delving into controversial subject matter. to see more, visit her website, fallenprincesses.

on a brighter note, i am having a give-away for my etsy store, being featured on steffy's pros and cons. be sure to enter! the winner will be chosen in a week:)

One Naughty Puppy

name: banjo campbell
cuteness level: 11 out of 10
crime: being a very naughty puppy!

guess who decided to get out of their cage and have a hayday while his mommy and daddy were at work? yup, this guy. this is what lucas came home to find.

we had just gotten home from camping and housesitting, so we had a whole bunch of random stuff lying around our living room. can you spot the nail file, bra, and measuring tape? thank God he didn't seem to want to go crazy in our bedroom--i had just put up all of my etsy items on a clothing rack!

this is his guilty face

and guess who got out of his cage for the second day in a row? seriously banjo?! it's a good thing he's so dang cute:)

New Store!

yes i said new store, not new in store. i have officially started another etsy store, dulcedecoco. how did this come to be you wonder? i'm glad you asked:)

my grandmother happens to be an expert seamstress with time on her hands since she retired this year. when i went home this weekend she showed me a slew of aprons she had made for no one in particular. 'grandma, you could sell these you know.' 'for what, five dollars?'

seriously grams? five dollars my behind. and that's where dulcedecoco was born. because the store will be selling handmade and vintage aprons and linens, i wanted the name to have a baking theme. but for any of you who have an etsy store know, finding a name is nearly impossible. so i decided to go the spanish route, since my grandmother is mexican and all. the name actually comes from a dominican dessert my brother-in-law makes, but it seemed to fit nicely.

this is the only item i had listed when i started the store, and it already sold! now to take pictures and post new items...

i hope you will take a look! you might want to give me a few days though:) have a great weekend everyone!

Fill In The Blank Friday

i am here at my parents' visiting for the weekend and i wish i could post more, but here are 'random' questions for this week's fill in the blanks. hope you are having a good weekend!

1. I am a (morning, evening, middle of the day person)    middle of the day person? definitely not a morning person! i used to be a night person, but when i got married i automatically became sleepy at 10 o'clock. what's with that?

2. My favorite Pandora stations are    jenny lewis, girl talk, ryan adams, sleigh bells, and misty edwards:)

3. 3 of my "must-have" songs for a road trip playlist are     hmmm. that is hard! most of the time i listen to podcasts on road trips, so i will list those--relevant, this american life, and the moth. but if i am listening to music in the car on a road trip it has to be something dancy like ghostland observatory or something i can sing along to like nield diamond:)

4. My favorite pattern is    hearts!

5. My favorite perfume is     chanel mademoiselle and chloe.

6. Rules are made for your own good! (most of the time). maybe it's just the teacher coming out in me, and i know it doesn't sound very cool, but it's true!

7. My most overused phrase or punctuation is ! and :) how will people know that i am smiling or excited if i don't use a smiley face? as far as phrases go, you would have to ask my husband:)

New In My Store

ohmygoodness i love summer! today is just one of those days that, even though you didn't do anything especially amazing, is just a great day. i woke up at my earliest convenience, showered, and got ready for the day in no kind of hurry. i went grocery shopping, ran some errands, and came home and had some lunch. soon lucas came home, and while he was napping, i made dinner. after we ate we sat on the patio outside and read for a bit--so nice and relaxing. then lucas took jake for a walk while i rode my bike--and it was 9 o'clock! what a lovely day!

here are a few items i have recently posted. i've been finding the cutest stuff!

hope you're having one of those simple, wonderful days:)

Pretty. Funny. Just Plain Awesome....and then some

this weekend was my birthday weekend and lucas and i decided to go to turner falls, ok and camp out. it was crazy hot, but luckily the water was nice and cool:) the park is full of natural swimming holes and creeks as well as a waterfall.

the next day we headed out to pauls valley, ok. we had planned on just setting up camp and seeing a movie, but they listed the wrong times online and we missed the movie. there is pretty much nothing else to do in pauls valley, no starbucks, no mall, so we were stuck with nowhere to go in the 100 degree heat.

we decided to walk around their downtown, even though everything was already closed and came across a large group of people dressed in costume in front of a toy action figure museum. it turns out it was a wedding! so random! we ventured on and stopped to look at a the window of an art gallery, and ran into the owner, who also ran the action figure museum!

he invited us to look inside the gallery, as well as give us a tour of the action figure museum. it was soooo cool! and everything came from his own personal collection. it also turns out that he was the illustrator for the original teenage mutant ninja turtle figures! supercool! after our tour, kevin, the owner, told us about the 'noodling' festival that was going on in town. we were in luck!

for those of you who don't know, noodling is basically when you stick your hands in a body of water, wait until a catfish 'bites, then pull if out by the jaw--pretty crazy. well it turns out that once a year pauls valley has this huge noodling festival where people from all over the world come to see the hugest catches. they put all of the biggest fish in this pool where you can then jump in and pull the fish out yourself! double crazy! it was pretty fun hanging out--there were tons of people, music, food, and drinks.

the next day we headed to arbuckle wilderness, which is basically like a drive-thru zoo where the animals roam free and you roll your window down and feed them. there animals aren't as exotic as you would see at a zoo, but it was still super fun. it was a little scary when we fed the animals, b/c they would basically stick their half of their head in the car, but that was part of the experience:) i wish i had pictures, but unfortunately, i left my camera at home! here's some other stuff instead:)

pretty.

instead of a treehouse, i'll take this treebed:)

perfect summer drink

when my husband saw this, he decided he was a dork:)

No Spring Chicken

so it's offical. i'm no spring chicken. nope, i'm 30! can you believe it!? i can't. while it feels weird to no longer be in my twenties and have all the advantages that go along with 'youth,' the older i get the more i look forward to getting older!

i do feel more comfortable in my own skin and all that, but i also feel like now i can be taken more seriously. i felt like getting married added to my 'adult cred,' but i also happen to look super young. but now, rest assured, i am 30!

to celebrate we had some friends over and cooked out and swam. we had shrimp and chicken shish kebobs and a whole array of desserts i had looked up in a rachael ray magazine:) it was pretty awesome. and ofcourse, any mexican birthday would not be complete without a pinata:) it was a wonderful way to celebrate, and i feel so blessed to have been surrounded by so many wonderful, caring friends:)

anywho, here are some pics of last week when we ventured to denton and had some coffee at jupiter house on the denton square. it was good times:)

tank: gap
vest: TheLovelyHunter Vintage
shorts: vintage (they used to be pants and i made them into shorts!)
sandals: UO
necklaces: vintage (that's a picture of me and my brother when we were little!)
rings: vintage, and my wedding band:)

well lovely people, i hope you have a fabulous weekend. lucas and i are headed out to turner falls to camp for the weekend, and i am so excited! see you monday!

I AM LOVING...BEST COAST

i posted a song from this band a while back, but i had to dedicate a whole feature to them because they are just that rad! they have a kind of surf pop sound that is perfect summer music, and every track on the album is just so catchy and well written.

i was curious about the band, b/c i knew nothing about them except that i liked their music, and was stoked to discover that the lead singer, bethany cosentino, is one cool chic with an equally cool sense of style. in one of her interviews i was delighted to learn that bethany has a love of stevie nicks, all things cat, and beyonce!

sorry to focus so much on bethany, but it's easier to relate to her, being a female and all:) but so as not to exclude the rest of the band: other members of best coast include bobb bruno and snacks the cat:) they are based out of los angeles, ca, and released their debut album 'crazy for you' in july 2010, which also happens to be one of my fave tracks. you can watch their video below--it is pretty freaking awesome:)

what do you think?

Sew What!

so i am already making progress on my summer goals! aren't you proud of me? maybe it is a good thing i wrote a post about my goals, because now i'll feel more accountable to actually follow through!

i had to borrow my mother-in-law's sewing machine and haul it to the house i am staying at. i actually have two sewing machines of my own--one is a super new machine with all these fancy gadgets and the other is a very old machine built into a mid-century modern desk. but i have no idea how to thread either of them! here is the machine i ended up using:)

i tried to make a tank top using another tank top i own as a pattern.

i used a vintage tablecloth for the material, with the cutest little tassels along the edges:)

everything went swimmingly until the actual sewing part...

it was not a total disaster, but my technique needs some work. this is the face i made when confronted with my mediocre sewing skills:)

my mother-in-law gave me a few tips that hopefully will help out--i will perservere! wish me luck!

Fill In The Blank Friday

this week has gone by so fast! next week is my birthday--so crazy! i did want to throw a big shindig since it's going to be my 30th, but i don't think i want to spend the time/ energy planning all that. plus i would have to have a big party at my apartment, which is pretty small, and i would much rather have a smaller group of closer friends here at the house i am house-sitting in, which is perfect for having people over.
here's my blanks!

1.   The best news I ever received was    when i got accepted to YWAM, Youth With A Mission, a missions school i had applied to. i was so excited for my life to change, and it did!

2.  Something I'm looking forward to is    getting older. i know it sounds funny, but i can't wait to have years of wisdom and experience, to have years of marriage under my belt, and a wiser outlook on life.

3.  Something I would never do is   cut my hair short again. i cut my hair boyshort my first year of college. why? i do not know. bad decision when you also have braces and have gained 10 pounds. i looked like a prepubescent mexican boy! it was definitely my ugly period.

4.  If I could choose someone to be my life coach (famous or not, living or dead), I'd choose    beth moore. beth moore is a well known christian author who is very wise but also very relatable. i was going to choose elisabeth elliot, but i think she is too hardcore for me:)

5.  If I had to put a label on my style it would be    unfussy? doesn't sound as cool as i'd like, but i don't like to wear anything too put together looking or too many accessories.

6.  One should always    be thankful for what you have. everyday.

7.  I want to    live overseas! doesn't have to be forever, but at some point in my life i want to do missions.
